The skeletons are the remains of the members of Ustasha and Croatian Home Guard units, which were killed after World War II. Archeologists have found the remains in a defensive ditch, which was dug out by the Germans during World War II to protect the airport.

The area of discovery in the time of war was a German military airport. After the war the partisan army took over. It is estimated that more burial grounds lie hidden around the Cerklje airport.
