The Yugoslav authorities, who opposed Slovenia’s declaration of independence, ordered the Yugoslav army to seize border posts in Slovenia only hours after the independence ceremony in Ljubljana was over.
Ten days after fighting broke out in Slovenia, representatives of the EU, Slovenia and Yugoslavia met on the Brioni Islands. They signed the so-called Brioni Declaration that ended all hostilities in Slovenia. Meanwhile, Slovenia agreed to suspend its independence efforts for a period of three months.
Slovenia’s independence efforts nonetheless continued. On July 18, Yugoslavia agreed to gradually withdraw from Slovenia. The last Yugoslav soldiers left Slovenia on October 26.
