On the other hand every tenth inhabitant of the world is hungry. Throwing food in the trash is ethically questionable and is also causing economic damage and the loss of natural resources. There is no accurate assessment about the quantity of wasted food in Slovenia and also about the incurred costs of that. Dr. Peter Raspor, associate dean for research and international cooperation at the Faculty of Health of the University of Primorska, believes that in matters food disposal Slovenia is under the average.

According to the Ljubljana-based company for waste management SNAGA a little more than 80 kilograms of food per capita end up in trash. Food that ends up in the trash is in third place among the causes of greenhouse gas emissions, because it contributes more than 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
