The Russian energy giant Gazprom has closed the gas supply to Ukraine yesterday after Kiev failed to pay 1.95 billion dollars of debt. Russia also filed a suit against Ukraine at the arbitration court in Stockholm. Ukraine said that it would make sure the gas was pumped to Europe via its gas transport system.
Geoplin, the largest Slovenian retailer of natural gas says that any suspension of deliveries of Russian gas to the EU will not have a negative impact on the supply in Slovenia. That’s because the consumption of gas in Slovenia is relatively small compared to the total EU consumption. Despite all measures to secure the supply of natural gas, negative effects could be expected if the supply was cut off for a prolonged period in wintertime. However Geoplin believes that such a scenario was unlikely.
