But raising duties on tobacco will require a change in the law. Thus, parliament today executed the necessary changes and hopes to have the new duties in effect by the first of May. The goverment hopes to raise an additional 14 million euros through higher duties, or 25 million euros a year. This is based on the assumption that smokers will continue to consume tobacco at the current rate. It's estimated that the price per pack of 20 cigarettes will rise by roughly 17 cents.
