From midnight to 2 p.m., the Notranjska and Brkini Hills regions were hit by 60 to 100 litres of rain per square meter. Another 20 litres are forecast to fall by the evening hours, the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) said today, adding that the Ljubljanica, the Pivka and the Reka rivers have reached their highest levels.

The Ljubljanica normally overwhelms parts of the Ljubljansko barje (Ljubljana Marshes) area, while the Reka mostly floods the middle and lower parts. The Vipava could also reach its flood level tonight.

Tomorrow’s high tide is expected to flood low-lying parts of the coast between 5 and 7 a.m. ARSO has warned that the bora wind in the coastal region could reach up to 70 or even 85 kilometres per hour. “The wind may topple trees, break branches, tear roofs off buildings, hamper traffic in some areas, and also make sea conditions rough,” meteorologists said.
