3,300 polling stations all over the country opened for the local elections, for the sixth time since the independence. The voters elected new local council representatives for the next four years in 212 Slovenian municipalities. Out of 11 city municipalities, in six mayors have already been elected, and in five the second round will be necessary. In the youngest Slovenian municipality Ankaran the elections for mayor have been held for the first time.

According to partial unofficial results of the elections, mayors of 159 municipalities have been elected, while in the remaining part of the municipalities the second round of election will be held in two weeks, with two best placed candidates facing each other in a run-off. The turnout was 44.04%, 14.802 ballot papers for mayors were invalid.

SLS Party was the most successful by the number of mayors (25), SDS Party came second with 17, and SD party got 12. By far most successful were those candidates who entered the election with the support of voters; 82 of such candidates for mayors were elected. For comparison we are giving data from 2010, when 41 mayors from the SLS Party were elected. In local councils SDS Party was victorious with 474 chancelors. In 2010 their number was 607.
