THE BOHINJ CHEESE-MAKING TRAIL
For centuries, Bohinj, situated in the heart of the Triglav National Park, has been the biggest Alpine dairy centre in Slovenia. Records on cattle herding and cheese-making date back to the 13th century, when the people of Bohinj used to pay their taxes with cheese. Although the locals are no longer as dependent on milk production as they used to be, mountain culture is still an important part of their identity. All this has been revived as part of the Tourist cheese-making trail project.
BEEKEEPING PISLAK BALI
Slovenians are a nation of beekeepers, so it comes as no surprise that the World Bee Day was proclaimed by the United Nations on the initiative of Slovenia. This is now celebrated on May 20th, the birthday of Anton Janša, the pioneer of contemporary beekeeping. World Bee Day is intended to raise awareness regarding the importance of bees for people, since about one third of all food produced depends on pollination.
 ILLUSTRATOR HANA STUPICA
The young illustrator and designer, Hana Stupica, is a representative of the third generation of the Stupica family of artists. With her artistic aesthetics, she drew attention early on in her career and received the highest Slovenian professional accolade in the field of illustration, which is usually awarded to established illustrators.
THE EUROPEAN POND TURTLE
Turtles are one of the oldest living creatures – some species have not changed since the days of the dinosaurs. Two types of turtles can be found in Slovenia: the loggerhead sea turtle and
the indigenous freshwater European pond turtle, which is endangered.
THE WREATHS OF ST JOHN
By the middle of the last century, it was typical in the villages of the Karst region that at the beginning of the summer, local people made wreaths and hung them on the doors and windows of their homes to chase away all that was bad. This fascinating ancestral tradition was revived in Štanjel in the late 1990s.
