The majority of the 13 new bike rental stations will be opened on Ljubljana’s arterial roads. In fact, they have been open since last Friday when they were first tested, but today will be the official opening. The Europlakat company will also add another 130 new bicycles in the system. The month of May will mark 6 years since the start of the “Bicikelj” public bike sharing service. So far, more than 100 thousand people have used the system, making almost 4 million bike rides. Around 30 thousand people have yearly subscriptions. Boštjan Brečan, the deputy head of the Europlakat company, says Ljubljana is at the very top of the world when it comes to public bike rental services.

On the other hand, others warn of the steady drop of passengers using Ljubljana’s public transport for four years now. However, despite those figures, Ljubljana is on track to meet its strategic goals in the field of traffic, says Nataša Jazbinšek Sršen from the municipal department for the protection of the environment.
According to a survey published on the website of the Municipality of Ljubljana, its citizens mostly commute on bicycles, followed by cars. Walking is in third place while by public transport comes in fourth.
