Statehood Day remembers the day 23 years ago when the country declared independence from the former Yugoslavia. On the 25th of June 1991, Slovenia's National Assembly passed the Basic Constitutional Charter and the Declaration of Independence.

With that Slovenia formally became an independent country. After taking control of its borders a ten-day war with Yugoslavia followed. The Yugoslav National Army started pulling back from Slovenia on the 3rd of July 1991.

The main ceremony marking the event was held yesterday in Ljubljana.
