The Ljubljana Municipality will soon launch a label, to be used by everyone who takes part in the campaign against plastic bags. The label will inform customers and buyers that a shop or a catering business is environmentally friendly and does not use plastic bags.

The Ljubljana campaign is an example of good practice and comes ahead of a directive which will prohibit free plastic bags. But plastic bags will still be sold, as is the practice of the majority of retail shops. "The biggest changes will be seen in stores with clothes, shoes, home electronics... etc., as that’s where we do not even think about plastic bags - we all associate plastic bags with supermarkets. We hope this directive will also be applied in practice," explained Jaka Krajnc from the Ecologists without Borders Association. Krajnc believes the step towards a full ban on free plastic bags is the right thing, and that it will definitely show positive results. In line with an EU directive, exempt from the measure will only be the very thin plastic bags used for fresh foodstuff, such as fruit and vegetables, and sorting bags with which you can separate cleaning detergents from food.
