Kačič received the most votes in the first round of voting, which also saw the candidacies of vice-chancellors Jernej Turk and Niko Samec. In the second round he managed to convince a slight majority of the non-pedagogic workers and students to give him their vote, while Oplotnik had more support from the university professors.

The mandates of the current vice-chancellors end next year, and Kačič does not see them among his future closest associates. Vice-chancellor Oplotnik said he was ready to cooperate, wherever his knowledge was wanted.

The University of Maribor has been without a chancellor since the start of the year, when the last chancellor, Igor Tičar, had to go into retirement before ending his mandate.
