Slovenian writer Fran Levstik is born. His works A Journey From Litija to Čatez, a critical essay Napake slovenskega pisanja and the classic tale Martin Krpan From Vrh, laid the foundation for the development of Slovenian prose.

In 1864 at a large rally in London the First International is established on the initiative of French and British workers. It was led by Karl Marx.

In 1891, American writer Herman Melville, author of the novel Moby Dick, dies. In most of his works Melville describes his adventures while travelling through the South Seas.

In 1895 French scientist Louis Pasteur, who discovered that fermentation is a biological process, caused by fungi. He introduced the preservation of milk by heating it to a temperature of 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. This procedure is called pasteurization after him. He also discovered the vaccine against rabies and cholera.

In 1910 Slovenian writer Ciril Kosmač was born.

In 1924 Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni was born.

In 1934 French actress Brigitte Bardot is born.

In 1956 American aircraft designer and industrialist William Edward Boeing dies.

1968 - 45 years have passed since the The Beatles gave the world ‘Hey Jude'. In 1968, on this day it took the top spot on the American singles chart, and remained there for nine weeks. The song was written by Paul McCartney, it was meant for Lennon's son Julian.
1980 - The Police are No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Don't Stand So Close To Me'.
1991 - American jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis dies. His album "Kind of Blue" significantly influenced the development of jazz music.
