23 ZL (United Left), DeSUS (Pensioners' Party), ZaAB and SD (Social Democrats) MPs called for an extraordinary session at which a referendum on the changes to the Marriage and Family Relations Act could be blocked.

These parties maintain that the changes to the Marriage and Family Relations Act did away with systemic discrimination. The changes enacting same-sex marriage equality were proposed by the opposition ZL, who say that the old law was discriminatory and thus unconstitutional.

'Children Are at Stake' group says the new law is unconstitutional and illegal
The 'Children Are at Stake' group has already responded to the request to halt a possible referendum, saying that the request is 'unconstitutional and illegal'. "We do not expect Parliament to block a referendum on the law enacting same-sex marriage equality," the group said.

If MPs decide to block the referendum, its proponents can appeal to the Constitutional Court. Otherwise, the referendum on marriage equality could go ahead if 35,000 signatures are collected within 35 days. Its proponents are confident that collecting enough signatures should not be a problem.
